Sports and politics

I always wondered why we sing the national anthem before middle school, high school, college, and pro sporting events. I played basketball in high school and I can recall the feeling I got while the anthem was playing right before the game. My adrenalin would be high and the feeling of pride for my country would come over me, but why? I'm just playing basketball!

I understand the concept that sports and politics do not mix, but is it really that big of a deal. If having a General toss the coin at a NFL game and have a both set up to recruit soldiers I don't see anything wrong with that. When the president tosses the first pitch in an MLB game i also see no harm in that. I feel as if it allows us to see the president in a way we don't get to see him often. Just another American enjoying the sport of baseball.

One point that I felt close to was the point Zinren made about girls pro sports. It really grinds my gears to hear the amount of woman athletes on the cover of Sports Illustrated SO LOW! I do understand that male sports are faster pace and to most people more entertaining to watch but women deserve more publicity than they receive in sports. They work just as hard as most of the men. I have to give ESPN some credit for having more women reporters on the sidelines and engaging in sports talk.
