Sports and politics

I always wondered why we sing the national anthem before middle school, high school, college, and pro sporting events. I played basketball in high school and I can recall the feeling I got while the anthem was playing right before the game. My adrenalin would be high and the feeling of pride for my country would come over me, but why? I'm just playing basketball!

I understand the concept that sports and politics do not mix, but is it really that big of a deal. If having a General toss the coin at a NFL game and have a both set up to recruit soldiers I don't see anything wrong with that. When the president tosses the first pitch in an MLB game i also see no harm in that. I feel as if it allows us to see the president in a way we don't get to see him often. Just another American enjoying the sport of baseball.

One point that I felt close to was the point Zinren made about girls pro sports. It really grinds my gears to hear the amount of woman athletes on the cover of Sports Illustrated SO LOW! I do understand that male sports are faster pace and to most people more entertaining to watch but women deserve more publicity than they receive in sports. They work just as hard as most of the men. I have to give ESPN some credit for having more women reporters on the sidelines and engaging in sports talk.

Honey Boo Boo

I can relate to the article "Honey Boo Boo could be my neighbor" because I come from a town where there are people like their family. Many of us look at people that are like Honey Boo Boo's family and instantly think they are ignorant and cannot do much for themselves and that is why they are poor. I think half the reason we think this way is because the media portrays these people in such a negative light. They show all the crude things they do and not the things that would relate “us” to them. The producers make the family look poor and stupid, so stupid it looks like they can’t even stay clean. Honey Boo Boo's family is not poor though. The mother is putting money they get from the show away for the girls college, she also does not spoil them with things they can afford but do not need. This seems pretty smart to me.

In class we talked about the show Honey Boo Boo. This discussion opened my eyes and made me realize how many shows are on T.V. that actually makes fun of the main charterers constantly. The producers put Honey Boo Boo's family in situations like going to a high end dress shop when one would expect them to act normal but the family acts in a "hill billy" way. The family acted in their normal way and talked about how their feet stink and how they looked fat in a short dress. The viewer’s then think they are being "stupid" saying these things in a nice dress store. Take a second and switch the roles. What if it was Kim Kardashian and her sisters in the store talking about their feet and bad appearance? I watch the Keeping Up With The Kardashians and they do this quite often. This is funny in a different way. Not in the wow that's funny they are so uneducated saying that out loud in a fancy store, but wow that's funny pretty rich girls talking about their smelly feet. Are these shows really in good fun like the article "Honey Boo Boo could be my neighbor" says they are not. I’d have to agree with him. People who live like Honey Boo Boo's family are then also getting a bad light on their way of living.
