Effects of Reality T.V.
In the show Honey Boo Boo, the Thompson family lets America in on their day to day life and focuses on their daughter Alana, who is a child beauty pageant. All that surrounds her is drama but of course. Networks have been quite sneaky and successful at developing this brand of ignorance on the part of viewers which is completely ignored and not seen by our society's ordinary radar for offensiveness. Much of what the show does is poke fun at how the people talk and act. What is more alarming is the fact that we as a nation have begun to expect this form of entertainment. People take the messages which are on display in the shows like, Honey Boo Boo and Duck Dynasty, and form these stereotypes associated with these people and the places where they are from. This is very damaging because most of what is assumed is in fact far from the truth. Reality t.v. is only on air because of money, not to inform people of how people live. Many of what people see is actually scripted to fit according to the producer's desires so that he or she can get the appropriate ratings and obviously to make the most money. This teaches the viewers that we can and at times should make fun of people who are under resourced, which is quite ridiculous to me. It is also damaging to the people in the shows because it teaches the adults and the kids that it is okay to sacrifice their personal lives all for money. All in all, these shows while entertaining are not at all beneficial to viewers no matter how many laughs are heard by a t.v. The subconscious absorbs much more than we can even imagine. When people watch these shows, they are feeding their minds garbage which translates into many stereotypes which develop out of these shows.
