Life Exchanged for What?
In the documentary, "Not Just a Game", many different topics surface. One specific idea is the fact that NFL players have a greater chance of dying 20 years earlier than someone who does not play professional football. This is absolutely crazy to me. Yet, not surprising considering how greedy we are as a nation. Greed tends to drive most people to do things they normally wouldn't do. Most of these players that enter into the league are at least somewhat aware of what could happen down the road from a simple football play. This football play refers to a player getting tackled or hit in the head if they play on the offensive or defensive line. Years of playing and taking week after week hits has proven to do severe damage which takes its toll later in life. It is criminal that are society has come to this where we pay so much for entertainment, yet what is it that we are actually supporting? Would anyone really want to see someone make a great football tackle if they knew that the person on the receiving end was going to end up in a wheel chair for the rest of their life? There are countless examples in sports, especially football, of people ending their careers due to injury. Is playing a sport and getting paid millions in the moment worth the sacrifice of having lesser quality of life or years later on? I think it's time people become more aware of the culture we live in and what all it is that we are supporting when we pay the $50 to see athletic people compete in an arena or field.
