Popular Culture should be a required college course

Now that this semester is beginning to wrap up… (whoa where did time go??)… I find myself thinking back to one of the first questions that this course purposed for us, which was why we should or should not study pop culture? To me, the answer is almost too simple. I don’t even think it’s a question of whether or not we should study pop culture; I think the bigger question is how could you not? We all know how rapidly many aspects of our culture are evolving, especially in the case of technology. We live in a tuned in, technologically driven society where we are almost completely immersed in popular culture, pretty much whether we like it our not. Of course, there are exceptions to that statement, but I feel very comfortable saying that popular culture is one of the central driving forces that shapes the society that we live in. So with that reality in mind, why wouldn’t we study pop culture? I think we would be foolish not to. That’s why I made the statement that popular culture should be a required college course. According to what we have learned in this class, popular culture is comprised of the everyday objects, actions, and events that influence people to believe and behave in certain ways. If this is a phenomenon that is surrounding us so predominantly, then heck yes we should be studying it. We should be learning all that we can about how pop culture works, what it consists of, and the numerous ways that it makes an effect on us. Knowledge is power, and power exists heavily in everything that makes up popular culture.
