I wanted to recap on this topic that we discussed in class because i thought it was very interesting and I wanted to give my 2 cents:
We came up with amny different definaitions of what a geek actually was. These included:
- Completely submersed into thier passion/ hobby
- Specialized in certain areas
- Genuinely enthusiastic about something
I feel that together this does a good job of defining what society considers to be a "geek." I might even go far enought to add that they are submersed, knowlegdable ans enthusiastic about something that maybe is not ver popular with the masses.
But there are some catches. Apparently inorder to be a fully fleded "geek," one must be exclusive, cannot be attractive, and is doubted when said "wanna-be" is female. These are double standards! If we excluded my tid-bit about something that may not be so popular with the masses, that is every person on this planet. Everyone is passionate about SOMETHING!
I feel like this image of "geek" may have started out, origionally, based off of a person with these qualities, but in the real world now, I don;t necessarily think these guidelines MAKE the geek. I think we still have this image of 'geek" etched in our brains becasue social media has reinforced it that way. BIg Bang Theory is a perfect examply of this. It is the most popular television show and it's about this band of nerds. In practically every episode, Leonard and Penny's relationship is doubted because he is geeky and smart and dorky, and she is beautiful, popular, and unintelligent.
Why can't the two go together and people just accept it? Because it is not how social media usually portrays it. The big buff hero gets the beautiful girl! Not the people the create the hero, or read about the hero. It simply isn't done.
But is this a reality? I am constantly seeing posts on facebook and twitter about how guys always complain that girl go for the wrong guys. They are always saying that ladies fall for the bad boy with the big biceps, who always breaks her heart. And usually the guys post things like this are the average Joes. But I think every girl needs to kind of go through this phase in order to realize the Average Joe is an option, and in the end I think the geek can get the girl. Because after a while, people just stop caring about social norms and eventually just start doing what makes them happy, which in turn, makes them a geek after all.
