Not too
long ago we talked about homosexuality and how the media portrays gays.
We talked about how some say its invigorating and empowering to come out
to the public. I think it can be quite
constricting. Today I watched a program
on HGTV called Property Brothers. The concept of this show is there are two
brothers they find couples looking to buy new houses. They find a house
for them and renovate it. Today for the first time the couple they choose
was gay. I don't know how often this is done but out of the ten or so
episodes I’ve seen they have never had a gay couple on. As I continued to
watch I begin to see differences. The gay couple didn't act like the
other couples on the show. They also kind of reminded me of the typical
gay couple. One of them seemed like the alpha he was the one who was in
charge of the money and the other was daintier. Dave, the dainty one,
kept making changes to the budget and seemed to have no concept of money.
Now, on most episodes when the big reveal is done the couple’s kiss and
celebrate however, on this one they just hugged. This made me ask myself
why didn't they kiss? Did they just not like to kiss or were they told
not to? All this made me think about the
way pop culture and the media and generally puts homosexuals into like a frame
and expects them to stay inside the lines.
